Travel Thursday – Austin edition
Sometimes, everything you need is right under your nose. And yet, you overlook it. Either because you think the answer is too simple to be right. Or because you see it every day that it becomes routine.
I’m lucky enough to live in a city filled to the brim with creative inspiration. Austin, Texas is dubbed the live music capital of the world and hosts two major music festivals every year: South By Southwest (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL). All I have to do is wander into any pub and I’d see live music every night of the week. And yet, more often than not, I take all this inspiration fodder for granted. Yes. GASP! I forget that it’s there. It’s just an every day thing for us.
Except that Austin is anything but common. We even have our own motto, “Keep Austin Weird.” And Austin is definitely weird. Who else hosts Eeyore’s birthday party year after year?
The colorful characters that make up Austin’s population come alive at our infamous festivals. They even show their quirks on a daily basis. Anyone remember Leslie? Our resident homeless transient who ran (and almost won!) for mayor and tragically passed away in 2012? Or perhaps you’ve seen the guy that I’ve named Bob who rides around near Auditorium Shores on his bicycle wearing nothing but a g-string.
Aside from the more memorable residents, we have many more artists, street musicians, dancers, hoopers, and flame throwers. Creativity abounds in Austin. Sadly, I get so caught up in my love for travel and new experiences that I simply forget I could be insanely inspired just from walking outside my front door. Hence, this week’s Travel Thursday post.
Here are some photos from Austin’s Pecan Street Festival.
Here are photos of some of Austin’s staples.
And here are some photos from Austin City Limits this past year.
All of these photographs were taken by Valerie Garza, one of our brilliant designers and photographers here at Logan Gattis Designs. Seriously guys, she rocks!
There’s definitely a plethora of people, things, plates, and activities to inspire me. Especially as we come into warmer weather. So I plan to make a list of places and activities I want to see/attend in the next few months. With my camera in tow, I’ll gather items for my inspirational files so I can pay proper homage to my wonderful home town.
I challenge all of you to do the same. What’s one thing happening in your home town this weekend that you could use to fuel your creativity? If you can’t find anything, how about a place that you could photograph for artistic inspiration? Share your answers in the comments section below.
Breathe. Live. Love. Create.
