Life Is Inspiring
When you come back home from a pretty epic trip, two things immediately happen.
- You have a vacation hangover. It’s hard to get back to work because you’d rather be right back on a flight to where ever you last were.
- You are pretty damn inspired.
That’s exactly where I was when I returned home from my Ireland trip last month.
The trip itself wasn’t all that long – 2 and a half weeks. But I was able to have 1 complete week of vacation and then 1 week of a working vacation. It gave me a unique perspective on things and I believe I’m going to structure all of my business trips this way. Or at least as much as I’m able to.
The week I was on vacation, I traveled to the West of Ireland. I stayed in Westport where I climbed to the top of Croagh Patrick. I stayed in Newmarket-on-Fergus at Dromoland Castle. I stayed in an Irish cottage in Ballyvaughn where I also got to hold an owl and scratch an eagle behind the ear. (No, I’m not kidding.) I had such a wonderful and relaxing time. I didn’t think about work and when I got back to Dublin, where I would spend my working vacation, I was completely recharged.
In Dublin, I interviewed some designers and two of them are now a part of Logan Gattis Designs. I was able to do the work I needed to do without feeling overwhelmed and our creative director, Andres, was a big part of helping me with that. All in all, it was great.
Dublin was not all work however. I was also there for St. Patrick’s Day. I ran my first 5k race and then I marched in the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day parade. It was extremely cold but it was also extremely fun.
So why am I telling you all this?
It’s to show you how inspiring life can be.
I didn’t plan on being inspired. I didn’t seek out art and design in Ireland. I simply chose to partake in activities that made me feel excited. And in doing so, I came back more inspired than ever.
What can you do this week to be inspired?
- Go for a walk outdoors and take your camera/phone. Snap photos of anything that tickles your fancy. Come home and create a mood board.
- Go through past vacation photos and relive fond memories
- Unplug from your computer, TV, and smartphone. Disconnect from distractions and just be. Be, without an agenda. Even just 5 minutes of this can recharge and inspire you.
- Think about something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet found the time to do it. Now go do it.
In the next few Thursdays, I intend to talk more about Irish design trends. However, that’s not the whole point of the Travel Thursday series. Travel Thursday’s will sometimes be about design trends around the world. Sometimes (like today) it will be about trips I’ve taken. Or perhaps even trips I want to go on. Sometimes it will be more about specific things I found inspiring while on these travels. These posts showcase my personality a bit more than the standard posts. And I hope you don’t mind me sharing.
My passion for traveling and learning about other cultures is THE reason I set up my creative agency the way that I did. I’ve been trying to find the best way of sharing that with y’all and this is what I’ve landed on for now.
So what would you like me to share with you for next Thursday? I’m happy to share details about particular experiences on my trip, what it’s like to run a company from abroad, or even design trends in Ireland. Whatever you want to know about, let me know.
Until next Thursday.
Breathe. Live. Love. Create.
