Where to find all the FREE unannounced ACL 2013 events
I’ll let you in on a secret.
I’ve lived in Austin for most of my life. Born and raised here, I have only spent 2 years and 3 months of my life living in other states/countries. And for all of my time here, I have NEVER attended Austin City Limits a.k.a. ACL.
I know. How can I call myself an Austinite?
So this year, after checking out the (brilliant!) lineup, I decided now was my time to shine. I bit the bullet and bought a 3 day wristband to the first weekend of ACL 2013. I was expecting chaos. It was rumored there were to be 225,000 people at this music festival and, like most locals, I was starting to really dislike all the traffic and crowds that came with the influx of people into my awesome, laid-back city of Austin. We are talking about a quarter of a million people here folks! I was halfway expecting to need to wear football pads to keep people from bumping into me as we stood shoulder to shoulder watching Kings of Leon rock the stage. I was positive that I’d leave each night extremely tired only to find that I had to wait another 2 hours in a parked car to be able to get out of my already cramped parking spot. Now you see why I never went prior to this year?
But I was so wrong. The crowds were fine. Even pleasant. The musical talent was phenomenal and I had an amazing time with my friends. The icing on the cake was that the longest it ever took us to get out of our parking garage at the end of the day was…wait for it…15 minutes. I had missed out on all of this fun for no good reason.
So it started me thinking, what else am I missing out on during ACL weekend?
Luckily for me, I didn’t have to look too far. We have just completed a website design project for unofficalacl.com. This website must be checked out. Not just for the design (although we’re very proud!) but also for the stellar content. This is THE site to go to if you want to find out everything that’s happening in Austin during the Austin City Limits music festival. This isn’t just limited to ACL 2013 events though. It’s all the events that only the locals know about. It includes every venue that’s having specials/parties/shows simply because ACL goers are in town. You can filter events by whether it’s free cover, or whether they are offering free drinks. If you are wondering which events require insider knowledge to know about, simply use the RSVP filter.
If you want to party like a local Austinite, you don’t want to miss this site.
Here’s just a few of the events listed for today:
Get free vodka at the Deep Eddy Vodka Beer Garden
Swim it up at the Barton Springs Block Party
Where to get autographs from the ACL lineup this year!
and also the Do512 VIP party.
I’m telling you, if you’re not from Austin and you’re lucky enough to be visiting our fine city, you don’t want to miss out on these great events. Hell, even if you are from Austin (like myself). I don’t want to miss out on them either!
So how’d we arrive at this awesome design?
First of all, our client’s instructions were pretty clear. Make it similar in graphic elements to the existing ACL website but make it extremely different and extremely awesome. So we chose to go with the “after hours” side of things. Thus, the dark color scheme. We kept the flat 2d illustration elements like the existing ACL website has as well as the modular layout but we really wanted this site to shine.
As for the logo, we were inspired by the neon signs found in bars all over town (and really, the world) so that’s how the concept came about. Luckily the client loved the concept too so we added a subtle flicker to the sign/logo when you load the page to emulate the “late night” feel.
We are definitely proud of the design and even more excited about the site’s content. As a matter of fact, we’re going to go check out an event right now!
Visit unofficialacl.com and get started exploring Austin. While you’re at it, let us know what you think of the design too. We always love to hear from y’all.
